We keep Siam memory alive, not in glass boxes

ThailandHeritage.net is an independent storytelling platform and field guide dedicated to Thai cultural heritage — tangible and intangible. We travel to crumbling laterite walls, morning alms routes, silk villages and night markets to record what guidebooks miss.

Our mission is triple: document temples, old towns, crafts and rituals with respect; translate Thai history for modern travelers; support local communities by driving slow, responsible tourism beyond Bangkok and Phuket.

  • Field-first: Every site card is visited on foot, with GPS trails, opening hours and etiquette.
  • Living heritage: We cover khon dance, Songkran, Loy Krathong, mor lam music, Benjarong pottery, pha sin textiles.
  • UNESCO focus: Ayutthaya, Sukhothai & Si Satchanalai, Ban Chiang, Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai, Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng, Kaeng Krachan, Si Thep + intangible listings.
  • Free & open: No paywall. Heritage belongs to everyone — from schoolkids in Isan to researchers in Chiang Mai.

Good questions, honest answers

What is ThailandHeritage.net?

An independent English-language archive and travel guide to Thai heritage — temples, old towns, crafts, festivals and food. We are not a tour agency; we publish free field guides and stories.

When is the best time to visit heritage sites?

November to February: cool, dry, festivals (Loy Krathong, Yi Peng). March-May is hot (Songkran in April). June-October is green + fewer crowds, but carry rain cover for Sukhothai cycling.

What should I wear in temples?

Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, no beachwear. Sarongs often rentable at Grand Palace and Doi Suthep. Tattoos of Buddha: cover them out of respect.

How many UNESCO sites in Thailand?

Eight World Heritage (cultural + natural) as of 2026: Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Ban Chiang, Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai, Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng, Kaeng Krachan, Si Thep, plus Phu Phrabat (2024). Plus intangible: Khon, Songkran, Tom Yum culture.

Is it respectful to join Songkran / Loy Krathong?

Yes — if you follow locals: use clean water gently (no high-pressure guns in temples), don't touch monks, use biodegradable krathongs (banana leaf, no styrofoam), no lanterns in restricted zones.

How to get around without a car?

Trains Bangkok-Ayutthaya-Lopburi-Chiang Mai are scenic and cheap. Grab + songthaews in cities. Rent bicycles in Sukhothai/Ayutthaya (50 baht). Domestic AirAsia/Nok Air for Isan-South hops.
